“Being a modern, research-centric educational institution, we need to provide safe and continuous Internet access to our students at all times”, said Mr. Mark Yap, IT Manager at the University of Hawai’i. They did have a FortiGate UTM in place which was expected to provide safe Internet access, but failed to deliver as it promised. In the words of Mr. Yap, “Fortinet does not understand the education market. Also, they have very poor customer service and aren't willing to make changes to their product or accept feature requests.” They were in search for a solution that could specifically provide Internet safety measures, keeping the educational industry norms in mind.

The major issues that they faced were:

Conformance to CIPA Compliance

“Being a part of an open network, we needed to secure segments of our network for CIPA compliance for our K-12 students”, said Mr. Yap. The Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) addresses concerns about children’s access to obscene or harmful content over the Internet. CIPA imposes certain Internet protection measures to be enacted by schools and libraries barring which these institutions do not receive government discounts over their Internet connection.

Exposure to Network Threats

In addition to conforming to regulatory compliances, Mr. Yap wanted to ensure overall security of the UH network. He wanted to allow online access to students, faculty and administrators, while simultaneously protecting its network from increasingly complicated blended threats in the form of intentional and unintentional intrusion attempts, and Denial of Service attacks. Also, all Phishing, Pharming and other malicious websites needed to be blocked.

The Cyberoam Solution

After exploring the market for a suitable replacement for their existing Fortinet solution, Mr. Yap zeroed in on Cyberoam. They deployed Two (2) CR 2500iNG at their Curriculum Research and Development wing in Gateway Mode. After Cyberoam installation, they noticed the following benefits.

  • Cyberoam Provides One-Click CIPA Compliance

    “Cyberoam is the only vendor that provides One-Click CIPA Compliance”, said Mr. Yap. “This feature proves to be a boon for us as it prevents the hassle of manually configuring CIPA-compliant policies”, he added.

    Cyberoam’s Web Filtering comes with a preconfigured CIPA Policy which blocks websites related to Adult Content, Hate and Racism, Alcohol and Tobacco, Plagiarism, Social Networking, Drugs, Nudity and the like. The administrator needs just that “one click” to apply the policy and his network is ready with all the necessary protective measures in place.

    Additionally, Cyberoam’s YouTube Education Filter distinguishes between the YouTube for Education traffic and other YouTube traffic. Hence, it allows educational institutions to make good use of Educational YouTube videos while keeping the other no-productive videos blocked.

  • Identity-based Authentication: Customized Integration with Apple’s Open Directory

    “We are a unique customer as we have our Cyberoam NG Appliance especially customized to integrate with Apple’s Open Directory (OD)”, said Mr. Yap. Cyberoam engineers worked closely with Mr. Yap to customize the UH Appliances according to his needs. Cyberoam’s integration with OD provides Identity-based security which gives real-time visibility into the online activity of students based on their usernames rather than IP Addresses, which gives him an insight into “Who is Doing What?” in the network.

  • All Network Activity under the Scanner

    Cyberoam’s On-Appliance sophisticated monitoring and reporting mechanism helps Mr. Yap and his team to perform timely and accurate assessment of all network activity in the entire CRDG department. Availability of such detailed reports enables him to update access policies based on changing network environment. Reports include “Internet bandwidth usage”, “top accessed sites” as well as Google search reports, which enhance the visibility of users’ online behaviour. The “traffic discovery” report helps him to identify the amount of bandwidth used by various applications
