St. George’s Diocesan School is dedicated to provide children in Namibia with quality education. It is a school for students from pre-primary to 12th grade.

Internet plays a vital role in the school for children to do research, take notes related to their studies and other things. Also, teachers and other staff of the school need Internet for their own purposes.

Along with providing the Internet for students as a basic facility, protecting them from harmful content on the web was also a necessity.

Mr. Paul Githuka, the Head of IT at the school mentioned that, “Along with providing the Internet for students as a basic facility, protecting them from harmful content on the web was also a necessity”.

The security issues faced were:

Uncontrolled Web Usage

The school was concerned about how the Internet was being used by the students, faculties and management. Mr. Githuka mentioned, “It was necessary for us to provide the students with access to the Internet, as and how they need it. At the same time taking care of their safety from unsuitable content related to violence, porn, etc. was also a major concern for us”. Moreover, the Internet was used by the staff, hence blocking websites useful for some and not for others was also not realistic.

The Cyberoam Solution

The school searched the market for a solution that could help them to control the unnecessary utilization of the Internet. During their search, they found Cyberoam to be capable of handling their concerns and purchased One (1) CR200iNG. They deployed it in Gateway Mode in the St. George College.

  • Controlled Web Usage

    Cyberoam’s Web filter solution provides 89+ URL categories enabling the school to prevent the students from accessing restricted websites and keep them focused on their studies. Cyberoam’s Web and Application Filter allows Mr. Githuka to create user and group based web and application access policies. Each student and staff is given only that much access as is required for their respective tasks and the rest of the inappropriate websites are kept at bay. Cyberoam’s identity-based filtering also allows the creating of schedules and assigning of Internet access policies, surfing quota, time limits and bandwidth restrictions to individual users based on certain criteria..

    Cyberoam also contains a policy named CIPA that can block numerous websites without any customization, posing danger to the very innocence of a child. Thus it ensures that no child is exposed to pornography and explicit content online.

  • Security Based on Identity

    Cyberoam UTM is equipped with a unique identity-based security solution that enables the school to know “Who is doing What?” in the network, thus protecting against insider threats. Mr. Githuka used Cyberoam’s LDAP facility to include the students and the staff under Cyberoam’s scrutiny. This feature greatly helps him to create policies for controlling the activities based on identity of the users rather than IP Addresses. Thus it helps him to know what is going on in the network without matching users’ IP Addresses with their names manually.
