About Sameer Africa Limited, Manufacturing
Sameer Africa Limited, formerly under the name Firestone East Africa 1969 Ltd, was established in Kenya in 1969 as a joint venture between Firestone Tyre and Rubber Company of the USA and the Government of Kenya with the aim of producing tyres for the Kenyan and the East African market.
The corporate identity changed to Sameer Africa Limited in April 2005 after a successful renegotiation of the technical and management contract with Bridgestone Corporation Japan. This change created an independent tyre producer based in Kenya and aiming to supply the East African and the COMESA markets.
Sameer Africa Limited wanted to protect the network against intentional and unintentional intrusion attempts and Denial of Service attacks. So they were in need of Gateway firewall and Intrusion Prevention solution for protection of their entire network.
Mr. Andrew Karimi
Network & Infrastructure
Sameer Africa Limited
According to Mr Andrew Karimi, Network and Infrastructure Administrator at Sameer Africa Limited, the company was facing the following security and connectivity challenges related to its business activities.
Battening the Fringe
Mr. Andrew Karimi wanted a solution that would control the entire Internet traffic and provides a level of protection from network-based attacks by allowing good traffic and denying bad traffic as defined by a security policy. They needed to protect the network against intentional and unintentional intrusion attempts, and Denial of Service attacks.
Malware and Spam Control
Sameer Africa Limited rely heavily on email in order to receive orders from customers as well as for internal communication; as with the majority of modern organizations email is the prime method of communication for the company. Therefore protecting their email servers was an important decision.
The organization was facing frequent breakdown issues due to annoying virus, root-kit, worm, Trojan and spyware infections. These malware attacks which often took a blended form through email attachments, PDF, Word documents etc. had the potential to corrupt useful files and destroy important data.
Consequently, Sameer Africa Limited was looking for a highly dependable anti-virus solution which would offer real-time protection from malware attacks including blended threats. Sameer Africa Limited also wanted to secure its entire email network from newly emerging malware threats and reduce overall spam incidence.
Controlling Surfing Practices
As one of their most critical issues, Sameer Africa Limited wanted to raise workplace productivity by putting a complete end to indiscriminate Internet surfing by its internal users. It also wanted the solution to ensure precious bandwidth is not wasted on downloads of audio, video and streaming files and nuisance applications like Yahoo Messenger and instead, diverted to more productive use. Moreover, Mr. Karimi, at Sameer Africa knew unbridled surfing represented an added layer of threat through malicious sites such as phishing and pharming which had to be resolved.
The Cyberoam Solution
