About Symbiosis Institute of Computer Studies and Research, Education

Symbiosis Institute of Computer Studies and Research (SICSR), established in 1985 in Pune, is committed to the best education in the field of Information Technology. It is one of the first institutes in Maharashtra to offer high quality computer education. Currently SICSR offers the following programmes:

- Master of Business Administration in Information Technology (MBA-IT)
- Master of Science in Computer Applications (MSc-CA)
- Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA)
- Bachelor of Business Administration in Information Technology (BBA-IT)

Internet has turned out to be a blessing for us, helping with our academics as well as for research purposes.

Mr. Dinkar. K. Maskikar
System Administrator

Mr. Dinkar. K. Maskikar, the System Administrator at SICSR, said, “Internet has turned out to be a blessing for us, helping with our academics as well as for research purposes”. Since Internet is such a useful resource he wanted to ensure continuous and secure Internet connectivity throughout the campus.

The security issues he noticed were:

Indiscriminate Usage of Internet

Mr. Maskikar wanted to prevent students from surfing unproductive social networking, games and other entertainment related websites. Moreover, it was difficult for the supervisors to keep a watch on everyone individually. In addition to this, they were unable to identify users using Internet via Wi-Fi or DHCP. He said, “To get protection in terms of quantity and quality, limiting the Internet usage and protecting the network from malware was a matter of concern”.

Inappropriate Bandwidth Utilization

In SICSR the available bandwidth was not being utilized effectively. The students used Internet for working on the tasks given as well as for unproductive purposes. This affected the bandwidth to such an extent that sometimes even the legitimate applications were difficult to access. Hence the institute wanted to restrict its students from uploading/downloading bandwidth-hungry content such as Music, Videos, online games and Streaming Media, and protect them from Malware laden websites.

Frail Network Security

SICSR network covered confidential data about the students, the courses, training programs, exam papers and other academic related information that was under constant threat from DoS, IP Spoofing and other network attacks. It was also significant to control any incident of communication loss or data tampering due to eavesdropping attacks from outsiders.

The Cyberoam Solution

SICSR considered many solutions and had demos of other products like SonicWall, to meet their requirements. Having a demo of Cyberoam, they liked it more and purchased One (1) CR300i. They deployed it in Gateway Mode at the campus. After deploying Cyberoam they found the following benefits:

  • Strong Network Defense

Cyberoam’s Firewall is Checkmark and ICSA Certified, protecting the organization from DoS, IP Spoofing and other network attacks. It provides granular access controls over Internet traffic and network resources. Also, Cyberoam’s Fusion technology enables administrators to create policies for multiple features through a single interface.

With a database of 4000+ IPS signatures Cyberoam’s Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) automatically detects, blocks and drops the suspicious HTTP, SMTP, POP3, FTP, IMAP, P2P and IM traffic, ensuring secured network. It also provides a facility to update signatures regularly, thereby providing zero-hour protection against latest network attacks.

Mr. Maskikar said, “Cyberoam’s Firewall and Intrusion Prevention System efficiently prevents the external threats from invading our network”.

  • Identity-based Security

Cyberoam UTM is equipped with a unique identity-based security solution that enables SICSR to get complete visibility of user activities in the network, thus protecting against insider threats. Mr. Maskikar said, “We integrated Cyberoam with our Active Directory to include the SICSR users with the network”. This feature helps him create policies for scheduling and controlling Web and Application access, and monitoring the activities based on identity of the users rather than IP Address.

Mr. Maskikar said, “We had an excellent and smooth experience working with this feature”.

  • User-based Regulation on Internet Usage

Cyberoam’s Web Filtering solution provides 82+ URL categories enabling the institute to prevent the students and staff from accessing restricted websites and keep them focused on their tasks. Cyberoam’s Web and Application Filter allows Mr. Dinkar. K. Maskikar to create user and group based web and application access policies. Each student and staff is given only that much access as is required for his task and the rest of the inappropriate websites are kept at bay.

Mr. Maskikar said, “Using Cyberoam’s Web and Application Filtering solution, we have been able to create custom policies for each and every department as well as at individual level”.

  • Judicious Use of Bandwidth

Cyberoam’s Bandwidth Management solution provides QoS for business-critical applications by prioritizing them based on a certain criteria. It also allows administrators to create schedules based on which time for accessing Internet can be allocated to each user. Moreover, it also offers identity-based bandwidth controls, preventing congestion and bandwidth abuse.

Mr. Maskikar said, “Bandwidth Management is the most appealing feature to us with the help of which we are now able to manage and optimize bandwidth prudently”.

  • To Conclude

Mr. Maskikar said, “Cyberoam is an excellent product and has first-rate Technical Support. It has also helped us in solving all our security concerns”.
