Cyberoam UTM – Regulates the Internet Usage for RCC
About Reynolds Construction Company, Construction

Reynolds Construction Company (RCC) is a subsidiary of SBI International Holdings AG (SBI), whose Headquarter is in Switzerland. SBI is a transnational construction and development group, with subsidiaries in several countries of the world. The Group’s projects span the globe with concentration of activities in Africa, Central America and Europe. Due to the flurry of business inquiries received and interest shown in the works, RCC was incorporated as a Nigerian company in September in 1969.

RCC, being in the construction industry required Internet for communication and general surfing.

Internet is our major obligation and the unrepressed usage of this valuable source had become a disappointing factor for us, affecting productivity tremendously.

Mr. David Marmur
IT Manager

Mr. David Marmur, the IT Manager at RCC said, “Internet is our major obligation and the unrepressed usage of this valuable source had become a disappointing factor for us, affecting productivity tremendously”.

RCC faced network security issues related to:

Unobstructed Internet Access

Mr. Marmur wished to prevent his employees from spending lots of time in surfing and getting distracted by social networking sites, downloading videos, music and such other entertainment-related websites. Due to these bandwidth-hungry websites, often legitimate applications become inaccessible. As a result, productivity and bandwidth both would get held back. Mr. Marmur said, “Unauthorized and unobstructed usage of Internet was a matter of concern for us”.

Uncontrolled Spam

Mr. Marmur wanted to control the unwanted mails that overflowed inboxes of the employees. These Spam mails would lead the employees to waste their time in reading and deleting them, resulting in unacceptable loss of productivity. It would also increase the load on the server, unnecessarily utilising the available bandwidth.

Malware Threat

RCC wanted to keep away from all sorts of malware attacks, as they could lead to a lot of unwelcome problems such as corrupt files, loss of vital data and system crashes resulting into network failure. Mr. Marmur said, “We noticed that most of the attacks arose by accessing unauthorized websites containing malware”.

Business Continuity Issues

One of the major requirements of Mr. Marmur was uninterrupted connectivity between the head office and other construction sites. They used Gilat and Dopc links to connect all the sites. But if any link failed, the offices got disconnected and as a result the business suffered. Mr. Marmur said, “If Internet was down all our business activities would come to a standstill”.

The Cyberoam Solution

In order to deal with the challenges, RCC considered many solutions like Tipping Point but they were not satisfied and finally opted for Cyberoam. RCC deployed Twenty-Eight (28) Cyberoam UTM appliances in their network in Gateway Mode, of which Three (3) CR100 appliances are deployed in the Head Office and other Twenty-Five (25) CR50ia appliances in their construction sites all over Nigeria.

After deploying Cyberoam, RCC found the following benefits:

  • Network Perimeter Secured

Cyberoam Firewall is ICSA and Check Mark Level 5 Certified. It provides granular access controls over Internet traffic and network resources. Also, Cyberoam’s Fusion technology enables administrators to create policies for multiple features through a single interface.

With a database of 4000+ IPS signatures Cyberoam’s Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) automatically detects, blocks and drops suspicious HTTP, SMTP, POP3, FTP, IMAP, P2P and IM traffic ensuring network security. It also provides signature updating facility that updates the signatures regularly and provides zero-hour protection against latest attacks.

Mr. Marmur said, “I am now assured that no external resources or threats can march into the network through Cyberoam”.

  • Internet Usage Obstructed

Cyberoam’s Web filtering solution controls the users from accessing unrestricted web sites by providing a comprehensive URL database with millions of URLs divided into 82+ categories to block them. Moreover its Identity-based control helps RCC to assign schedule and level of access to users based on their designation and role for surfing the web. In addition, HTTPS scanning controls scan the web traffic and blocks unauthorized, malicious illegal HTTPS websites thereby preventing data leakage.

Mr. Marmur said, “The ease with which Cyberoam’s Web Filtering solution has controlled unproductive web access is excellent”.

  • Controlled Spam

Cyberoam’s Gateway Anti-Spam solution provides Recurrent Pattern Detection technology that is content and language independent. Moreover it provides protection against foreign characters and image-based Spam with almost no cases of false positives. Finally, its Virus Outbreak Detection (VOD) feature protects the network against real-time massive virus outbreaks.

Mr. Marmur said, “With Cyberoam at our gateway, Spam mails have been controlled to a great extent.”

  • Malware Wiped Off

Cyberoam Gateway Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware solution is CheckMark Level 5 Certified. This solution provides the company with web, E-mail and Instant Messaging security against malware like worms, Trojans, viruses and spyware. It also scans the web, mail and VPN traffic to ensure that no malware sneaks into the network by any means

Mr. Marmur said, “Cyberoam Anti-Virus assured that no malware slipped into the network unknowingly”.

  • Business Continuity Revived

Cyberoam UTM provides total business continuity through Automatic Link Failover. This feature automatically detects a failed link and directs all the traffic through another working link, keeping the network “Always on”. Mr. Marmur said, “In our organization two ISP links are load balanced to ensure constant connectivity”. He further added, “Multi Link Management is one of the best features of Cyberoam, helping us to reduce expenditure”.

  • To Wind Up

Mr. Marmur said, “Cyberoam is a good product and I would recommend it to all in search of a good network security solution.”
