Municipality of San Mateo, Rizal Prefers Cyberoam Over Fortinet to Curb Network Security Threats
About Municipality of San Mateo, Rizal, Government

The Municipality of San Mateo is located in Rizal, Philippines and serves as the legislative arm of the Municipal Government. The body enacts ordinances, and lays down policies and programs for the upliftment of the community.

The organisation has come a long way since its formulation and is better known as the local government Code of 1991. The organisation holds a critical role in municipal decision making and is headed by the likes of the Municipal Mayor Jose Rafael Diaz and Municipal Administrator Ricardo R. Gomez. Mr. Diaz has profound knowledge about Internet security and understands the importance of a Firewall in a critical network.

We had to pick the best-fit Network Security appliance from a basket that contained the likes of Fortinet. However, in the demonstration given to us, Cyberoam outplayed all its competitors! Whether it comes to productivity, features or pricing, Cyberoam was second to none.

Mr. Reggie S Linco
Municipality of San Mateo, Rizal

Highlighting the organization’s Internet security requirements Mr. Reggie Linco, ICTO – Network and System Division Supervisor, Municipality of San Mateo, Rizal said, “We needed a solution that would secure our organization from unproductive use of the Internet. End user vulnerability to Virus attacks was also a grey area.”

The crux of the requirement proposed that Mr. Linco was looking for a one-stop solution that would:

Curb Unnecessary, Bandwidth-exhaustive Web Surfing

Productive time and precious Internet bandwidth is often wasted when irrelevant websites or applications are accessed. This eats up into the precious bandwidth that powers the organization’s critical applications. The organization sought an Internet Filtering solution in the quest of escalating productivity and optimizing resources. This helps cater to the company’s prime requirement as quoted by Mr. Linco; “There was a need to segregate departments based on their occupational requirement.”

Need for Non-Patchy Active Directory Integration

Mr. Linco wanted a solution which would facilitate seamless integration of the Network Security device with their Active Directory. This would allow them to apply different policies depending upon individual or group occupational requirement.

The Cyberoam Solution

After sieving the market for the correct solution, the organization purchased 1 (One) Cyberoam CR100iNG and 1 (One) CR50ia Appliances apiece which are deployed at the ICTO – Municipality at Rizal. An emphatic Mr Linco added, “We had to pick the best-fit Network Security appliance from a basket that contained the likes of Fortinet. However, in the demonstration given to us, Cyberoam outplayed all its competitors! Whether it was productivity, features or pricing, Cyberoam was second to none. ” Cyberoam has helped the organization in:

  • Setting up Line of Defence - Firewall

Municipality of San Mateo, Rizal operates Cyberoam’s ICSA and Checkmark Certified Perimeter Firewall between the Internet and the organization’s network to establish a secure environment for the organization’s computer and network resources. The Perimeter Firewall provided by Cyberoam proved to be a key component of the network architecture. “Mr. Paul A. Reyes, the Department Head for IT of our organization evaluated each feature and the Rules and Policies created by him form the backbone of our network architecture. Also, the IPS (Intrusion Prevention System) has worked wonders for us and prevents both malignant and curious intruders from spoofing on our Network.” said Mr. Linco.

Employee computers are free from virus and other malicious attacks. Access to computers in the network is well guarded. Cyberoam also controls granular access over Internet traffic as well as within network resources.

  • Effective Filtering

The Internet is a critical research resource for Municipality of San Mateo employees. Municipality of San Mateo, installed Cyberoam not only to manage and control internet traffic, but to also save precious Internet bandwidth for more resourceful applications. Cyberoam's granular controls filter out bandwidth-intensive downloads such as torrents and streaming internet media thus reducing unproductive burden on the bandwidth.

Cyberoam’s web database has more than 100 million sites neatly categorized into more than 89 categories. Moreover, Web filtering and content management is customizable which gives a lot of flexibility to the organization in terms of spelling out the preamble to the Internet usage.

  • Identity Based Security and Seamless Active Directory Integration

With Identity-based Security as an additional parameter, departments can be segregated on the basis of their productive bandwidth usage. The organization can then judiciously allot the required bandwidth to the classified identities. “It is easy for us to set up policies based on specific roles within our organization. Cyberoam integrates smoothly with the AD Server and we use Captive Portal for authentication. The overall experience has been pleasant and non-patchy.” Mr. Linco added.

  • Round the Clock Connectivity

Cyberoam’s Multilink manager increases the overall network performance by load balancing the network traffic between 3 (Three) ISP links that terminate in the company network. In case of failure, the load is automatically transferred to the other ISP links, which leads to 100% Internet uptime, and interminable connectivity to their employees. An emphatic Mr. Linco supports this by adding “Combining multiple ISP’s tremendously increases productivity of users and reduces bottlenecks.”

  • Establishing a Secure VPN Tunnel

The organization operates in a way where certain Administrators need access to specific Network resources for monitoring purpose through a VPN connection. Cyberoam helps such Administrators to establish a secure SSL VPN connection and seamlessly access network resources. Elaborating further, Mr. Linco added, “We have never faced a glitch. Administrators have never complained of having a leaky tunnel or bottlenecks within it.”

  • To Conclude

Mr. Linco says, “Cyberoam exceeded our ROI expectations. It’s like keeping your treasure in a box. We have installed a security appliance to effectively apply Identity-based security policies. Bandwidth management based on role based segregation is in place now.”
