Cyberoam Provides Secure Internet Access to Mobile-8 Customers
About Mobile - 8, Telecommunication / Cellular Network

Mobile-8, a cellular operator, was established in December 2002, using a brand name Fren (Fast Reliable Enjoyable Network). It responded to the ever increasing need of mobile communication services in Indonesia. Currently the company has over two million subscribers and is growing fast.

In the process of deploying the technology, Mobile-8 strategically teams up with Qualcomm as its supplier of the CDMA technology and Korea Telecom Freetel (KTF) as its Operation & Maintenance consultant.

On May 2, 2006 Mobile-8 became the first CDMA cellular operator in Indonesia to commercially launch a 3G high-speed mobile internet services in Jakarta based on CDMA 2000-1x Evolution Data Optimized (EVDO) platform. This included the introduction of TV MOBI, allowing all Fren subscribers to enjoy a wide-range of streaming multimedia content broadcast live through TV channels as well as through video-on-demand.

To date, Mobile-8 is the fourth largest and the only CDMA-based nationwide cellular operator in the 800 MHz spectrum on the CDMA 2000 1X platform. As of June 30, 2006 Mobile-8 has achieved approximately 1.3 Million subscribers of whom 98.3% are prepaid subscribers and 1.7% post-paid subscribers.

“Simple deployment, easy to maintain Internet security solution that would provide comprehensive Internet security for our “Mobi” product, was our one and only requirement”

Mr. Reginald Ariyanto
Head of Community Sales

Mr. Reginald Ariyanto, Head of Community Sales at Mobile-8 was looking for a solution to provide “’Internet Sehat’ meaning healthy-Internet; Internet sans pornography, hidden spyware and other malware, protecting customers from surfing harmful sites. He was looking for total content security for his customers accessing Internet over mobile. This security was mandatory and a pre-requisite as they planned to pack it with their modem and data solution product, called "Mobi".

The ‘Mobi Product Requirement

In case of blended threats, Mr. Reginald Ariyanto was looking for a solution that could block all harmful downloads over the Internet. All Phishing, Pharming and malicious Websites need to be plugged. No external proxies or any other spurious means of bypassing the content filtering solutions should be open to the users. “It is a matter of faith. We cannot let our customers come to any harm while they are using our services,” he said.

The Cyberoam Solution

Mr. Reginald scoured the market for viable solutions. After speaking to PT. Raditya Mulia Lestari, the distributor of Cyberoam UTM, the company decided to deploy one CR1500i in bridge mode. All the internet traffic is monitored and filtered.

  • Smooth Deployment

A Mobile-8 customer who has subscribed to the safe internet browsing through ‘Mobi’ is routed through Cyberoam UTM. Once when the customer is authenticated and checked for ‘Mobi’ subscription, the Secure Service Gateway routs all its traffic through a CR1500i.

  • Filtering Internet Sludge

Cyberoam’s Web filtering is powered by more than 44 million websites, neatly categorized in 82 filtering categories. The Web content filtering feature was quick to configure, with minimal adjustments and easy to manage.

All harmful and malicious sites are safely out-of-bounds for the users. All third party proxies and other modes of surreptitious browsing are plugged. To the pleasant surprise, Mr. Reginald found out that the URL Filtering feature is also able to filter out all local undesirable Web content too. Content filtering is provided over HTTP, HTTPS and FTP over HTTP. Hence the full web spectrum is covered.

Cyberoam’s application layer filtering allows Mobile-8 to control IM and P2P applications. Any phishing or pharming Websites are weeded out to ensure that no
personal information is accidentally passed over to criminals.

Unauthorized and harmful downloads are blocked. Content filtering categories allow Mobile-8 to develop policies to block access to sites associated with spyware, phishing, key-logging, malicious mobile code and malware.

Cyberoam promotes non-invasive security that is transparent to the normal user. Unless a security policy is violated, the end user never comes to know of the security rules. On violation, Cyberoam allows Mobile-8 to display customized messages to the user regarding the blocked Web pages. Mobile-8 has customized these messages to fit their business requirements of ‘Mobi’. This helps the service provider educate the users gently, yet firmly about the corporate Internet policy and helps inculcate safe surfing habits.

The Cyberoam UTM has performed so well that Mobile-8 is looking to deploy another CR1500i to form a High Availability cluster to enhance total business connectivity to “Mobi.”

“Cyberoam CR1500i has performed extremely well and more importantly has required no maintenance. It has been matchless and flawless in its performance. We are fully satisfied with Cyberoam,” said Mr. Reginald Ariyanto.
