We were looking for a onebox, hassle-free solution that
would ease our Internet based Security, Connectivity and Productivity concerns.
Mr. Yong Yew Lee
Konica Minolta Business Solution
Mr. Yong Yew Lee, the IT Manager at the Singapore office of Konica Minolta was looking for a single box solution to meet their security, productive and connectivity needs. “We needed a gateway firewall, anti spam, anti virus, content filtering and intrusion prevention solution,” informed Mr. Yong.
Access Control and Intrusion Prevention
The organisation needed a firewall and an intrusion prevention solution. The combination of both the solutions was needed to protect the network against intentional and unintentional intrusion attempts, and Denial of Service attacks .
Controlling Surfing Practices
In the absence of any surfing control solution, the organisation had to rely on the self discipline of the employees to surf prudently and safely, which was not always the case. Intentional or unintentional harmful surfing often opened the possibility of malware infiltration from the Web. There was a constant lingering fear of dowloading inappropriate software goodies like screensavers, instant messengers and P2P applications. One of the most important vectors of worry was the employee
productivity. The productivity might be affected while spending precious time in unproductive surfing and messaging.
Konica Minolta daily faced a huge deluge of spam mails. Many of these mails were not only unsolicited, but were laced with worms and Trojans. In the absence of an anti spam, all the unfiltered mails have to first be stored and then manually filtered by the individual user. In case a malware laced mail was accidentally opened, it led to multiple complications and the IT housekeeping had to step in to rectify the problem.
In the absence of gateway anti virus, users surfing the Web (HTTP), transferring the file (FTP) and exchanging mail (SMTP, POP3, IMAP) were constantly exposed to the danger of malware infestation. Simple day-to-day activities were often fraught with hidden dangers and in case of infection the productivity suffered as the IT department had to interfere to rectify the situation.
Konica Minolta is a non IT company and hence the manager was looking for a one box solution that was easy to configure and quick to blend in the existing network.
Mr. Yong decided to compare a leading Unified Threat Management (UTM) solution with Cyberoam UTM. On deployment, he soon found that Cyberoam has a better success
rate of filtering the spam mails, and able to integrate with the AD for identificati on and policy setting. One of the most glaring security gaps found was that the other leading UTM was not able to block Skype but Cyberoam UTM is able.
The Cyberoam Solution
Mr. Yong decided to deploy Cyberoam UTM as a gateway to Konica Minolta Business Solutions’ Singapore office and showroom. The UTM blended seamlessly into the existing network.
He has configured Cyberoam to use Active Directory for external authentication. Identity is used in Cyberoam to encapsulate the user in a security policy that follows him wherever he or she logs into the network. The identity of a user is used as a decision parameter in Firewall, Intrusion Prevention, Anti Virus, Anti Spam, Web Content Filtering and Bandwidth Management. This ensures total policy compliance.
- Firewall and Intrusion Prevention
Cyberoam firewall is ICSA and Checkmark certified. It uses user’s identity, IP address, MAC address, service and time as decision parameters. This matrix provides unparalleled flexibility to the administrator to create firewall rules for access control to various network resources. Coupled with Intrusion Prevention module, Cyberoam UTM can counter any Denial of Service attack. Mr. Yong now felt the network is secure.
- Filtering Solution
The web filtering solution controlled all the Internet accesses. As per the organisation’s rules, certain sites are strictly out of bounds. All spyware and malware laced sites are blocked. Phishing and pharming sites are also blocked. With a database powered with 82 categories and more that 44 million sites, Mr. Yong has matchless flexibility to configure security policies. He can now even control the HTTPS based websites access.
- Gateway Anti Virus and Anti Spam
Gateway anti virus and anti spam solutions, watch over all the web (HTTP, FTP) and mail (SMTP, POP3 and IMAP) transactions. This ensures that the network is sanitized and all the inboxes are clean. As per Mr. Yong, “We were particularly concerned about malware sneaking through the mail traffic. Cyberoam blocked more than 95% spam mails.” Cyberoam also deploys a second layer of anti malware protection, aimed at mitigating a zero day attack. If a zero day attack is launched, Cyberoam’s signature-less Virus Outbreak Detection feature can detect it hours before any antidote is available.
- UTM Benefit
Mr. Yong can block all user from downloading any Instant messenger, including Skype from being downloaded using the Content Filtering and Anti Virus solutions. The content filtering solution can prevent the users to surf to the site, and the Anti Virus solution can block any file transfer over the Internet. Cyberoam is capable to block any user from signing into any instant messenger application, including Skype.
- To Round is Off
“We found that Cyberoam is a dependable, one box solution to all our security, productivity and connectivity needs,” Mr. Yong opined.
