Mining Industry Using Cyberoam UTM for its Rescue
About Jordan Phosphate Mines Company (JPMC), Mining

JPMC was incorporated into a public shareholding company in 1953. It operates in three mining locations across the central and southern parts of Jordan; Al Hassa, Al Abiad, and Eshidiya Mines. JPMC produces up to 7 million tonnes a year of rock, making it the world's sixth largest phosphate rock producer and the second largest exporter.

Their mission is to become an effective marketer and efficient low-cost producer of phosphate products that earns an above industry-average return on capital employed for their shareholders.

The network covered sensitive information which was under constant threat from spyware attacks. So they needed a strong Firewall solution.

Mines Company

According to Mr. Ahmad Abdel Aziz, Network and System Engineer at JPMC, the company was facing the following security and connectivity challenges related to its business activities.

JPMC users use Internet heavily for their daily activities, research work, for sales, advertising etc. Due to the rising number of Internet threats, Security of their corporate data has become a key concern for them. They wanted to put a stop to any incident of communication loss or data tampering due to eavesdropping attacks from outsiders. They were looking for ways to improve the manageability and scalability of their networks without increasing their costs.

So they needed a strong Firewall solution to fight against these attacks.

Controlling Malware and Spam Numbers

JPMC‘s servers contain the applications, and data that can be possibly targeted by attacks from external entities. Unsolicited e-mail, more commonly known as spam is a rising and complex problem. High bulk of spam mails ate a lot of precious bandwidth and it began strangling their mail server.

In addition, Mr. Aziz had to combat the proliferation of new viruses and worms that, in some instances, threatened to shut down corporate servers. JPMC recognized the problem and was in search of an anti-spam and anti-virus solution with high spam catch rate which would scan mails across all protocols including SMTP, POP3 and IMAP and keep false positive rate low.

Control Unproductive Surfing

The organisation needed to know who was accessing what sites and needed an identity based filter and reporting system that would include a users‘ online behavioural audit. The solution would also be required to block harmful spyware/malware infested sites. It was also required to limit access to unproductive sites - such as entertainment, online shopping and gaming – and block „phishing‘ and „pharming‘ sites which ploy users into edifying confidential data.

VPN Connectivity

JPMC has evolved into an organisation with independent networks at remote sites supporting many users. The primary challenges for JPMC were to provide access to sensitive data across a more secure and stable VPN. Internet is relied on profoundly to allow remote sites VPN access back to the main office.

The Cyberoam Solution

JPMC looked into a number of security products including Fortigate and Blue Coat in order to address their business challenges. The search was on for an appliance which would take care of their all above requirements with acceptable price. The company then deployed One (1) CR 1000i at the head office in Gateway mode.

The business benefits are as follow:

  • Safezoning Internal Networks

JPMC operates Cyberoam‘s ICSA and Checkmark Certified Perimeter Firewall between the Internet and the organization‘s network to establish a secure environment for the organization‘s computer and network resources. The Perimeter Firewall is a key component of the JPMC‘s network security architecture. This Perimeter Firewall policy governs how the Perimeter firewall will filter Internet traffic to mitigate the risks and losses associated with security threats to the JPMC‘s network. This policy is designed to protect employee computers from hacking and virus attacks by restricting access to computers on the JPMC‘s network and provides granular access controls over Internet traffic and the network resources. Mr. Aziz now felt the network is more secure.

  • Malware and Spam Free Internet

Cyberoam‘s gateway anti virus and anti spam features guard all the web and mail protocols and ensure that no malware or spyware sneaks through the perimeter. Recurrent Pattern Detection (RPD) powered signature-less anti-spam technology works instantly on deployment, with the least human intervention and is language independent. It blocks spam in any language regardless of the content, e.g. image, audio, video or zip-based spam. The anti-spam feature is also equipped with Virus Outbreak Detection. This protects the organization against any zero day attack.

  • Web Content Filtering

Cyberoam‘s 82+ category tough Web Content filtering technology kept the organization‘s internet resources effectively focused. The Content filtering features makes sure that all P2P and Instant Messengers are blocked and that there is no breach of data.

  • Flexible Internet Connectivity

The IPSec VPN solution of Cyberoam bridged the geographical distances between the organization‘s branch and head offices. This now ensures that the user can connect securely from any location and use the organization‘s resources. Highly encrypted traffic enforced security over the Internet and ensures that no malware sneaks through.

  • To round it off

“Cyberoam had proved very useful for our organization. It has helped us to achieve what we desired. Very easy to set up and manage."”, Mr. Aziz concluded.
