HPBS sensitive information was under constant threat with spyware and DoS attacks. Therefore, they needed a strong Firewall solution which would be capable in retorting these threats.

Mr. AbouBakr Mohammed Ezzat
IT Manager,
Hard Precast Building Systems

Below mentioned are the challenges faced by HPBS related to its business activities:

HPBF users use Internet heavily for their daily activities, research work, for sales, advertising, to maintain solid and long term business relationship not only with its clients but also with its suppliers and consultants. Due to the rising number of Internet threats, Security of their corporate data has become a key concern for them. They wanted to put a stop to any incident of communication loss or data tampering due to eavesdropping attacks from outsiders.

They were looking for ways to improve the manageability and scalability of their networks without increasing their costs. At the same time, the unprecedented continuity; 24x7 Web services were also their prime requirements.

So they needed a strong Firewall solution to fight against these attacks.

Spam-free Email Traffic

Unsolicited e-mail, more commonly known as spam is a rising and complex problem. High bulk of spam mails ate a lot of precious bandwidth. So they needed to stop them at the gateway. Anyone could send you an e-mail you wouldn't want to receive so determining which e-mail you definitely would not want to accept can be tricky. The organization was concerned that employee productive time was being wasted in deleting spam messages and frequently checking for false positives. Also, the spam mails spiked with malware intended to sabotage the company‘s network from within.

Traditional spam filters were ineffective as the spammer changes the contents, format, type and language of a spam mail. So, they were looking for an anti-spam solution with high spam catch rate which would scan mails across all protocols including SMTP, POP3 and IMAP and keep false positive rate low.

Control Unproductive Surfing

The organization needed to know who was accessing what sites and needed an Identity based filter and reporting system that would include a users‘ online behavioural audit. The solution would also be required to block harmful spyware/malware infested sites. It was also required to limit access to unproductive sites - such as Web-mail, HTTPS, news, online shopping and gaming - and block ‘phishing‘ and ‘pharming‘ sites which trick users into revealing confidential data.

VPN Connectivity

HPBS has evolved into an organization with independent networks at many sites supporting a large number of users. The primary challenges for HPBS were to provide access to sensitive data across a more secure and stable VPN and to improve the management reporting on Internet usage and accessibility.

The Cyberoam Solution

Before zeroing in on Cyberoam, HPBS had done a preliminary testing on Cisco Products too. They purchased Two (2) CR25i and Two (2) CR50i appliances after it met their desired requirements, later deploying it in gateway mode at their head office and branch office. It led to immediate benefits for the organization as discussed under:

The Wall of Fire - Firewall

Cyberoam ICSA and Check mark Certified Firewall offers Stateful and Deep-packet inspection to provide granular access control over Internet and network resources. It prevents unauthorized persons from accessing private networks connected to the Internet. Data entering or leaving the Intranet passes through the firewall, which examines the data and blocks data that does not meet the specified security criteria. It also implements policies based on User Identity in addition to source, destination zone, IP address and application and provides access control over all the Internet traffic.

Spam Control

Cyberoam‘s Gateway Anti-Spam feature enables the organization to filter out all their mails over SMTP, POP3 and IMAP protocols and automatically detect, tag, quarantine and block spam.

Cyberoam‘s Gateway Anti-Spam solution has a spam catch rate of over 98% and absorbs a large portion of junk mails at HPBS with its IP reputation filters before they hit the mail servers. At the next level, Cyberoam‘s RPD-based content-agnostic anti-spam solution offers protection against foreign characters and image-based spam with almost no cases of false positives. Finally, Cyberoam‘s Virus Outbreak Detection (VOD) feature automatically detects and block any new malware attacks emerging from emails and protects the organization against any zero day attack.

Controlled and Secure Browsing

One of the most important vectors of worry was the employee‘s productivity. The productivity might be affected while spending precious time in unproductive surfing and messaging. Cyberoam UTM‘s web content filtering feature controls Internet access in the entire organisation by blocking inappropriate and unsafe Web content, including Phishing and other malware-laden sites. Moreover, Cyberoam‘s identity-based filtering allows sets individual user Internet access policy, surfing quota, time limits and bandwidth restrictions.

VPN Connectivity

Mr. AbouBakr Mohammed Ezzat, IT Head at HPBS, needed to extend business operations at branch and remote sites by fully protecting their internal systems and assuring the availability of centralized network management.

The CR50i appliance deployed at the Head Office was used to ensure IPSec VPN connectivity along with the Cyberoam appliances at branches. This allowed remote office users to seamlessly access their work without any worries of breakdown in Internet traffic. Threat-free Tunneling (TFT)-driven VPN ensures that all such traffic is securely encrypted and no malware sneaks through it.
