Green Fuel, Zimbabwe, Africa
Cyberoam – A Single Medicine for All the Internet Security Issues of Green Fuel
About Green Fuel, Energy

Green Fuel is the first large-scale ethanol producing factory in Africa. They manufacture anhydrous ethanol from sugarcane and supply to Zimbabwe and other regions, with a clean, efficient and renewable fuel source. Green Fuel produces high quality anhydrous ethanol with less than 0.04% water content, generating the best performing fuel in the market.

Internet generally plays a vital role in the functioning of most companies. In the case of Green Fuel, Internet was crucial for research, communications and other administrative activities.

We tried ClearOS Open Source UTM for securing our network, but it was unsatisfactory and created issues for us.

System Administrator
Green Fuel

Mr. Aaron Baard, the System Administrator, mentioned his problems saying, “We tried ClearOS Open Source UTM for securing our network, but it was unsatisfactory and created issues for us.”

The network security issues they faced were:

Inefficient IPS System

Green Fuel’s network contained confidential data about their research, investment, tenders etc. All this sensitive data was under constant threat from DoS, IP Spoofing, Man-in-the-Middle and other network attacks. It was also necessary to control data tampering due to eavesdropping attacks from outsiders. Mr. Baard stated, “The solution we tried was not efficient enough to protect us from the intrusion attacks”.

Reckless Usage of Bandwidth

Mr. Baard was worried about the unnecessary bandwidth being used in the organization. He often noticed that the available bandwidth was used for unproductive tasks like uploading/downloading, social networking sites and accessing other bandwidth-hungry websites. Due to this work suffered as legitimate applications and websites became almost inaccessible .

Consistent Virus Attacks

General and unrestricted surfing provided a doorway for malware to enter the network. These malicious objects like Trojans, viruses, spyware etc. entered stealthily through surfing, Emails, downloading and VPN tunnels. Hence, Mr. Baard wanted to safeguard the organization’s network from such attacks that resulted into adverse consequences such as loss of data, corrupt files and system crashes leading to serious downtime. He also mentioned that they received consistent virus attacks from the Internet which caused a lot of trouble for their IT team to troubleshoot.

The Cyberoam Solution

Being unsatisfied with their earlier venture with ClearOS, Green Fuel searched for another solution that could meet their above concerns. They found Cyberoam to be competent enough to fulfill their expectations and purchased Four (4) Cyberoam appliances, One (1) CR35ia at Willowvale Harare, One (1) CR25ia at Zimbabwe Bio Energy, One (1) CR25ia at Nuanetsi Ranch Mwenezi and One (1) CR25ia at Green Fuel Chisumbanje Estate. They deployed all in Gateway Mode. They also purchased One (1) Cyberoam NetGenie and One (1) Cyberoam Central Console.

The benefits noticed after deploying Cyberoam are:

  • Blocked Intrusion Attacks

Cyberoam’s ICSA and Check Mark Certified Firewall, provides granular access controls over Internet traffic and network resources. Users are given controlled access to network and Internet resources, ensuring that no security loopholes are left open.

With a comprehensive database of 4500+ IPS signatures, Cyberoam’s Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) automatically detects, blocks and drops the suspicious mail and web traffic ensuring total network security. It also protects Green Fuel’s network from spoofing, DoS and DDoS attacks in addition to keyloggers and Trojans. Also, it provides signature updating facility that updates the signatures on a regular basis and provides zero-hour protection against latest attacks.

Mr. Baard mentioned, “Cyberoam has efficiently blocked the outsiders from invading into our network, providing a safe and secured surrounding”.

  • Efficient Usage of Bandwidth

Cyberoam’s Bandwidth Management solution solved the prior issues with slow network. It provides identity-based bandwidth allocation which prioritizes business-critical applications and users, ensuring smooth business continuity. Moreover it helps Mr. Baard to create schedules based on the designation of the users, so that everyone gets the required amount of bandwidth.

Mr. Baard mentioned, “Cyberoam has efficiently controlled the unnecessary usage of bandwidth, improving the network speed and also making legitimate applications and websites accessible.”

  • Controlled Virus Attacks

Cyberoam’s Gateway Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware solution scans the web, Email and VPN traffic protecting against malware including viruses, spyware, worms, keyloggers and Trojans. In addition, the anti-virus blocks attachments for specified file types like executables, media files and password-protected attachments before these threats enter and destroy the network.

Mr. Baard stated, “Cyberoam’s Gateway Anti-Virus ensures that no malware slips into the network by any means, providing relief to our IT team and employees”

  • Controlled Virus Attacks

Cyberoam’s Web Filtering solution, offers a comprehensive database of 89+ web categories ensuring that no employee can access inappropriate or harmful content like pornography, violence etc. Cyberoam’s Application Filtering blocks all malware-laden sites, P2P, IMs, illegal audio, video, streaming media and other bandwidth-intensive download. Moreover its Identity-based control helps Mr. Baard to create and assign schedules, policies and level of access to users based on their designation and role for surfing the web. In addition, HTTPS scanning controls unauthorized secure access, thereby preventing unauthorized download, upload and data leakage.

Mr. Baard said, “Using Cyberoam’s Web and Application Filtering solution has enabled us to create custom policies and assign them to each one accordingly”.

  • To Conclude

Mr. Baard stated, “Cyberoam has greatly improved the management of our networks and Internet links.” Being satisfied he further added, “Cyberoam is worth the investment and we shall continue to use it even in future.”
