Constant Internet access exposes our network to various security threats
Mr. Atul V.S
Being an educational institute, Internet is used in GISAT by students and faculty alike for research purposes. GISAT also maintains its website, and provides access of its Library and Information Division material to students over the web. “Constant Internet access exposes our network to various security threats” said Mr. Atul V.S, System Administrator at GISAT. He noticed the following issues regarding network security.
Unaccounted Web Browsing
Although Internet is a tremendous tool for research and communication, it also acted as the biggest distraction to students. In the absence of restrictions on Internet surfing, students were tempted to surf unproductive sites like social networking and gaming sites. Mr. Atul wanted to establish effective measures to control access to the Internet and protect the students from accessing unproductive or dangerous websites. Also, he needed a decent reporting solution that would help him to keep track of internet usage patterns of the students.
Bandwidth Usage Off the Roof
Unmonitored and Illegitimate upload/download of data took a toll on the institute‘s available bandwidth. Mr. Atul sought to keep an eye on and limit its students and staff from accessing unproductive sites involving music, video, gaming and social networking. Uncontrolled and harmful surfing and downloading crippled the education network. Academic-related websites and applications were to be given priority in bandwidth usage.
Mr. Atul wanted to allow online access to students, faculty and administrators, while simultaneously protecting the network from increasingly complicated malware threats which often took a blended form. “Unrestricted surfing and downloads invited a deluge of malware and spyware”, said Mr. Atul. Such illegitimate and harmful malware strangulated the network‘s bandwidth and, in some extreme cases, even brought the entire network down.
The Cyberoam Solution
Mr. Atul looked through a number of security solutions, searching for one that would fulfil all their needs. After scrutinizing varied solutions, including Fortigate and Netasq, he closed in on Cyberoam. They bought One (1) CR 200i which is deployed in Gateway Mode at their Data Center in Vennimala.
After Cyberoam deployment, the following benefits were seen.
